It's unfortunate, but there are times when someone receives the gospel with great joy, only to slip back into a former way of thinking - one that can even finally reveal their spiritual death. This is particularly true when it comes to self-righteousness. A person can start their faith trusting in the grace of God alone, only to turn to legalistic efforts at self-righteousness when it comes to spiritual growth.
